SCIENTIFIC NAME : L-Dihydroxyphenylalanine

INTRODUCTION : Mucuna prurienes also known as Cowhage contains a very powerful neurotransmitter pre-cursor L-Dopa. L-Dopa is a white or slightly cream - coloured, crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, practically insoluble in alcohol & ether. It is freely soluble in hydrochloric Acid. L-Dopa extracted from Seeds of Mucuna is more effective as drug than the Synthetic Counterpart.

PHARMACOLOGY : L-Dopa is a powerful GH releaser. Mucuna pruriens is a rich source of L-Dopa as it contains about 15% L-Dopa. Increase in GH levels can have profound effects on lean body mass and fat loss. This would be a great supplement stimulate muscle growth. L-Dopa again has significantly affect on dopamine metabolism in the striatonigral tract. This ability helps improve Parkinsonian symptoms in humans.

Extraction & Purification of L-Dopa : The process for the extraction and purification of L-dihydroxy phenylalanine from Mucuna Pruriens seeds. In this process the whole seeds were extracted with 1% aqueous acetic acid containing 0.1% sodium sulfite for 6 hrs at 60 Deg. C. The filtered extract was concentrated from 5 liters to 500 ml in a rotary vacuum evaporator at 60 Deg. C. and left in a refrigerator to crystallize. The crystals were recovered by filtration and dried. The product was purified and traces of tyrosine removed. The advantages of this process are elimination of one operation from the previous procedures, easier extract filtration and better purity of product.

USES :
