INTRODUCTION : Mucuna pruriens produces clusters of fruits called pods. Each pods contain 2-6 seeds. Removal of these seeds have to done very carefully to avoid the stinging hairs from the pods containing mucunian causing sever irritation to skin upon touch. Mucuna prurienes a legume is indigenous to India.

DESCRIPTION : The seeds of Mucuna prurienes vary in colour from black, white to mottled. The seeds resemble the eye of a bull; they are often collected and made into lovely necklaces and bracelets. The seeds are rich in amino acid L dopa, precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Mucuna pruriens has reputation in Ayurveda as a remedy for nervous and sexual diseases.

FORM OF USE : Purified and then powdered for therapeutic uses.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS : In the production process the mucuna seeds are cleaned and cracked. As a purification process the seeds are boiled in water for 20–60 min. Then the cooking water is thrown away. Purified Seeds are then dried and ground up to obtain mucuna powder.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUTENTS : Seeds of Cowhage contains 7–10% L-dopa L-dopa. L-DoPA (dihydroxy phenylalanine), glutathione, lecithin, gallic acid, glycosides, nicotine, prurenine, prurenidine, dark brown viscous oil. Seeds are high in protein, carbohydrates, lipids, fiber, and minerals.
The seed coat contains a number of bioactive substances such as tryptamine, alkylamines, steroids, flavonoids, coumarins, cardenolides.

USES :
In one study, oral intake of the seeds in 56 human males was able to improve erection, duration of coitus, and post-coital satisfaction.
The seed also has fertility promoting and spermatogenic effects in human males, being able to improve sperm count and motility.
The toasted ground seeds are used as a coffee substitute in Brazil; the young pods are cooked and eaten in India.
In traditional medicine of India the burned seeds are used as an ointment against swollen glands.
The seeds are used in leucorrhoea, menorrhagia, spermatorrhoea by doctors with traditional knowledge.

CAUTION : The seed is a known teratogen and has uterine stimulant activity. It should not be used during pregnancy or breast feeding.
